UK Recording Studio Hourly Rates (2025)

In 2025, most UK recording studios charge between £25 and £100 per hour. That broad spread reflects differences in location, facilities, gear, and whether services like engineering are included.

What affects studio rates?

Average Costs for Recording Studios

  1. Type of Recording:  The nature of your project—be it vocals, instruments, or full band recordings—can also affect pricing.
  2. Studio Quality: High-end studios with state-of-the-art equipment and acoustically treated rooms will typically have higher hourly rates.
  3. Experience of Engineers: Experienced sound engineers or producers may charge more due to their expertise and reputation.
  4. Location: Studios in the heart of a major cultural city like London tend to charge higher rates compared to those further out of town or in more rural areas.

As mentioned, on average, you can expect to pay anywhere from £25 to £100 per hour for a recording in most studios in the UK. Here’s a breakdown of what you might find:

Budget Studios (£25-50 per hour)

Budget studios are often found outside major urban areas or may be smaller facilities that cater primarily to local artists. These studios might not have all the bells and whistles but can still provide decent quality recordings for those on a tight budget.

In particular, they may not have the space or equipment to comfortably record bands live, so anticipate working in a more traditional studio style, layering each track up from guide takes with the rhythm section, or working to scratch tracks.

  • Pros: Affordable rates; good for beginners or small projects.
  • Cons: Limited equipment; less experienced staff.

Mid-Range Studios (£50 - £75 per hour)

Mid-range studios offer a balance between quality and affordability. They typically have higher quality equipment and more experienced engineers than budget studios, some will be larger recording spaces, but for readers based in London, don’t assume this!

  • Pros: Good quality recordings; better equipment; experienced staff.
  • Cons: Higher costs than budget options; may still lack some high-end features.

At Arcus Sounds, we’re proud to be one of the few studios that still specialises in recording full bands live. It’s a skill that requires the right space, the right gear, and a lot of experience – which we’ve spent years honing.

Not every studio is set up for this kind of session, and not every artist is ready for the challenge. But we often find when it works it brings out something uniquely powerful. We’re focused on keeping this approach viable, updated and relevant to you, supporting artists to capture as much of their natural energy and interplay as possible – without compromising on quality.

High-End Studios (£75 - £150+ per hour)

High-end studios are equipped with top-of-the-line gear and often feature renowned sound engineers who have worked with big-name artists. Think Abbey Road and beyond… These studios are ideal for professional musicians with great budgets looking for premium sound quality.

  • Pros: Exceptional quality; access to top-tier equipment; expert engineering support.
  • Cons: High costs; may require advanced booking due to popularity.

Day Rates and Flexible Packages

A lot of studios offer more than just by-the-hour bookings. You’ll often see:

  • Hourly sessions (typically with a 2–3 hour minimum)

  • Half-day sessions (~4 hours)

  • Full-day sessions (6–8 hours, with breaks)

  • Multi-day sessions for longer projects such as EP or Album Recording

Longer bookings may include a discounted hourly rate, and they give artists more breathing room to settle in, find the right rhythm and create an environment that’s conducive to creativity.

It’s important to remove the pressure or expectations around being instantly productive from the moment you step into the studio – good creative output doesn’t tend to happen in a mindset where everybody is ‘counting down the clock’.

Don’t underestimate the impact this can have on your session – it’s very important to factor in additional time to listen, reflect and course-correct if needed; it can make a real difference to what you walk away with.

Additional Costs Beyond Hourly Rates

While hourly rates are crucial when budgeting for your recording session, there are additional costs that you should consider:

Equipment Rental

If your project requires specific instruments or gear not available at the studio, you may need to rent them separately. This can add an extra £20 – £100+ depending on what you need.

All recording sessions at Arcus Sounds include full access to our in-house equipment—interfaces, mics, amps, cables, and more. Whether you’re booking a session with our engineering team or dry hiring the space to run your own setup, everything on-site is available to support your workflow. That includes the vocal booth, live room, and even the sofa. I know, right?

Mixing and Mastering

After recording your tracks, you’ll likely want them mixed and mastered professionally. Mixing services can range enormously… You will see some people quoting a per track price, but our experience as a studio has taught us that this isn’t useful, different tracks have different mixing needs, and there is no benefit to rushing this part of the process it has such an impact on how your music is heard, time spent getting it right technically and artistically is really important. We charge £25 per hour for mixing.

Mastering is more predictable, and might cost an additional £30 – £100 per track, we charge £72.

Session Musicians

If you’re looking for session musicians to enhance your recordings, hiring professionals can add another layer of expense—typically around £100 – £200+ per day depending on their experience level.
